Une rencontre mémorable au CEAC à Toronto en 1976

De Kay did put this message to me on his Facebook page. Of course, l remember. It was at the Centre for experimental art and communication founded by Amerigo Marras, Duncan street in Toronto in november 1976.

Later on Amerigo Marras came to attend in Paris our Third Front against New York meeting at the École sociologique interrogative.

Dans la revue québécoise Inter, Richard Martel rapporte:

Une réunion célèbre, organisée par Amerigo MARRAS, a été tenue au CEAC à Toronto et faisait suite à la rencontre à laquelle MARRAS avait participé lors de l’événement Art as Contextual Art tenu au Malmô Konsthall en Suède le 9 février 1976. C’est Jean SELLEM qui avait organisé à l’Université de Lund, pour The Institute of Art History, cette première exposition sur l’art contextuel polonais avec la participation de Wojciech BRUSZEWSKI, Zbigniew DLUBAK, Henryk GAJEWSKI, Andrzej JORCZAK, Anna KUTERA, Pawel KWIEK, Romuald KUTERA Lech MROZEK, Jozef ROBAKOWSKI, Jan SWIDZINSKI et Ryszard WASKO. C’est à cette occasion qu’Amerigo MARRAS avait contacté Jan SWIDZINSKI et fait connaissance avec l’art contextuel. Puis, par la suite s’est tenue en novembre 1976 à Toronto, la fameuse réunion entre Jan SWIDZINSKI, Hervé FISCHER, ART AND LANGUAGE, Joseph KOSUTH et Sarah CHARLESWORTH. Un dossier sur cette rencontre est paru dans le numéro 5 de la revue Parachute, à l’hiver 1976. Hervé FISCHER commentait : « Ce qui nous intéresse dans la proposition de l’art contextuel, c’est son antidogmatisme, son intérêt pour les processus continuels de déstructuration de modes de pensée qui ne correspondent plus à la réalité et l’opposition d’autres modes de pensée plus adéquats ». L’art contextuel était en fait écartelé, si l’on peut s’exprimer ainsi, entre l’art conceptuel et l’art sociologique.
